How AI Guided My UX/UI Project Journey: A Case Study with Brady UX
Introduction
Embarking on a recent UX/UI project for a client at Brady UX, I made a bold decision: I would use AI as my co-pilot at every stage of the design process. From the initial proposal to client communication, and all the way through design iterations, ChatGPT played a crucial role in helping me meet the client’s needs and expectations. This blog post documents that journey, sharing how AI not only assisted me but also enhanced my efficiency, communication, and creativity throughout the project.
Getting Started: Using AI to Land the Job
The journey began when I was searching for potential projects on Upwork. I found a webpage redesign opportunity that aligned with my skills, so I asked ChatGPT to help craft a cover letter. With a clear focus on enhancing conversions, refining colors, and emphasizing client messages, the cover letter was polished, professional, and engaging. It highlighted my experience in UX/UI design, and how I could help the client reach their goals.
The AI-generated cover letter impressed the client, Andreas, and got me through to the next phase of the hiring process. This was the first sign that integrating AI into my workflow could be a game-changer.
Project Kickoff: Setting the Design Direction
The project officially kicked off with Andreas requesting a redesign for a specific webpage on his site, transactionpartner.ch/firma-verkaufen. I knew from the start that AI would help keep the process smooth and professional. As soon as we started communicating, I fed the details into ChatGPT to analyze Andreas’ goals, preferences, and concerns. This allowed me to create a strategy that addressed all his requests upfront.
ChatGPT recommended color changes, typography adjustments, layout improvements, and methods to make the CTA (Call to Action) more prominent, all with an emphasis on maintaining a serious and trustworthy design — values that were crucial to the client.
Design Iterations: Trusting AI with Design Decisions
One of the project’s main tasks was to create three different design versions for the client to review. Here’s how AI played a pivotal role in each step:
- Typography Choices: Based on ChatGPT’s guidance, I selected different font combinations for each version:
- Version A used Merriweather for a classic, authoritative feel, complemented by Dancing Script to add a handwritten touch for quotes.
- Version B utilized Kalam for a more friendly, approachable vibe, paired with Lora for a sophisticated, professional look.
- Version C, the final choice, featured Playfair Display for a bold, modern aesthetic, with Patrick Hand for a quote that felt personal yet legible.
- Color Palette: I trusted ChatGPT to suggest color adjustments that would work well together and be WCAG-compliant. It advised using a dark blue base with complementary gold accents to maintain a professional tone while adding warmth. This hybrid design transitioned from a darker theme at the top to a lighter theme toward the bottom, striking a balance between boldness and readability.
- Layout Adjustments: ChatGPT’s recommendations were spot on when it came to restructuring sections for a more logical flow. This guidance ensured that important elements like testimonials, client feedback, and process steps were arranged in a way that enhanced the user experience.
Client Feedback and Adjustments: AI as a Communication Bridge
Throughout the project, Andreas provided feedback, often pointing out areas where the design could be refined. Instead of going back and forth manually, I shared the feedback with ChatGPT and received polished responses to communicate changes back to the client. Some examples include:
- Andreas mentioned that the site felt “too dark,” and ChatGPT helped me frame a response explaining that I had lightened the background to create a more balanced and inviting feel while maintaining the professionalism of the dark blue theme.
- When Andreas expressed concerns about elements feeling “lost in space,” ChatGPT suggested adding borders to sections like “Häufige Fragen” to help them stand out, ensuring they felt connected to the overall design.
AI even helped with more technical aspects, like creating a responsive three-screen Figma prototype to demonstrate how extended content would appear when “Mehr lesen” (“See more”) was clicked. It guided me on how to make the prototype interactive, ensuring Andreas had a clear understanding of the user experience.
Refining the Final Design: AI’s Role in Delivering the Chosen Version
After several rounds of feedback, Andreas selected Version C, which ChatGPT had dubbed the “Bold & Dynamic” version. Here’s how AI helped finalize it:
- CTA Adjustments: Andreas noted that the CTA buttons needed to be more prominent. Guided by AI, I enlarged the buttons, adjusted their placement, and ensured they contrasted effectively with the background colors.
- Combining Sections: The AI suggested merging “Gründe für den Firmenverkauf” with “Dafür steht Transaction Partner AG” as a seamless way to unify related content, making the page flow logically and meet Andreas’ expectations.
- Maintaining Consistency: The AI reminded me to keep elements like testimonials and processes visually distinct, ensuring they stood out without clashing with other sections.
The Final Product: A Collaborative Success
The final design was a seamless blend of human creativity and AI-powered precision. It had a sophisticated look with a hybrid dark-to-light theme, clean typography that conveyed trust and professionalism, and an optimized layout that guided users naturally toward key CTAs. All adjustments and refinements were informed by AI’s analysis and recommendations, proving that AI can be a powerful partner in the design process.
Reflections: Could I Have Done Better Without AI?
Deep down, I know that I could have delivered a great product without AI. My skills, experience, and creativity are honed to tackle complex design challenges. However, using AI allowed me to approach the project from a fresh perspective, save time, and ensure that every decision was backed by data-driven insights. It let me focus on other projects while still delivering a high-quality product, making the entire process more efficient.
Conclusion: AI as a Design Partner
This project demonstrated that AI isn’t just a tool for automating tasks; it can be a true partner in the creative process. By integrating ChatGPT at every stage, from initial outreach to final design refinements, I was able to stay professional, responsive, and efficient, all while delivering a design that exceeded the client’s expectations.
AI didn’t replace my skills — it enhanced them. And as I continue to explore the potential of AI in my UX/UI projects, I’m excited to see how this technology will keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in design.
