A Follow-Up Post: Navigating Setbacks in UX Design
In the ever-evolving landscape of UX design, opportunities can arise unexpectedly, bringing both excitement and challenges. Recently, I embarked on a journey with a potential client, a venture-backed SaaS startup we’ll call TechConnect. Their goal is to revolutionize business communications through a cloud-based phone and unified communications platform, targeting small to medium-sized businesses in under-served regions.
The Initial Interview
My first interview was with the CEO, John, who introduced me to TechConnect’s vision. John explained how they aim to provide an affordable yet high-quality communication solution in markets like Pakistan, Egypt, and Dubai, where such services are limited. The conversation was promising, and I could see the potential for significant impact.
Crafting the Proposal
Understanding the opportunity, I decided to propose a team approach from Brady UX, instead of offering my services as a solo designer. I brainstormed several reasons why a team would be more beneficial for TechConnect:
- Diverse Skill Set: A team can offer a variety of skills and perspectives, enhancing the design quality.
- Faster Turnaround: Multiple designers can expedite the project timeline.
- Comprehensive User Research: A team can conduct more extensive research.
- Continuous Support: Ongoing support and iterative improvements post-launch.
- Scalability: A team can scale with the project’s needs.
- Collaborative Innovation: More minds foster creativity and innovation.
- Risk Mitigation: Reducing risk of delays or disruptions.
I detailed this approach in a proposal and shared it with Olya, my colleague, for her feedback and contributions.
The Second Interview
My second interview was with the CPO, Mark. Mark emphasized the importance of an effective onboarding process, crucial for ensuring high user adoption and utilization within the first 30 days. He asked to see some of my work, so I showcased the live 1st90 web app and a prototype of 1st90’s onboarding flow.
However, during the screen-sharing, I faced technical difficulties. It was embarrassing and took some time to troubleshoot, which made me worry about the impression it left. After reviewing my work, Mark’s response was, “Okay, that’s all the questions I have. John will follow up with next steps.”
Utilizing AI for Support
Throughout this journey, I used an AI-powered chat assistant to help organize my thoughts, draft emails, and even create this blog post. The AI provided invaluable support, allowing me to focus more on the creative aspects of my work and less on administrative tasks. This integration of AI in my workflow not only streamlined my processes but also enhanced the quality of my communications and documentation.
Current Status
After the second interview, I followed up with a detailed proposal to hire Brady UX as a team and to schedule a call to discuss the project further. I also invited TechConnect to apply for our pro bono initiative, Design Alchemy. This initiative offers a complete and impactful design project within a dedicated 5-day timeframe, allowing companies to experience our work firsthand.
Unfortunately, this morning I received an email from John, the CEO, informing me that they have decided to move forward with another candidate. While this news was disappointing, I am grateful for the opportunity to have engaged with TechConnect and to have presented our vision.
Reflecting on the Process
This experience has been a reminder of the unpredictable nature of our field. It’s about navigating challenges, learning from each interaction, and continuously striving to deliver the best possible outcomes. As we await the next steps, I remain committed to refining our approach and demonstrating the value that Brady UX can bring to future projects.
Using an AI chat assistant during this process has underscored the importance of leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and output quality. It allowed me to craft well-thought-out proposals, keep track of communications, and even document this journey effectively. This hybrid approach, combining human creativity with AI efficiency, is a testament to the evolving nature of our work in UX design.
In the age of AI and rapid technological advancements, the fundamentals of user-centered design remain crucial. This journey with TechConnect has reinforced the importance of effective communication, adaptability, and resilience in the face of challenges. I look forward to updating you all on future opportunities and hopefully sharing a success story soon.
Stay tuned for more updates as our journey in the world of UX design continues.
